When Should You Ask For Air Filter Changeouts?

There’s a simple thing you need to remember. Most of the air filters that you use come with some guidelines right on the box. If you read them carefully you will notice they say you should change your air filters once every three months. This is the average time slot.
However, it’s not the rule. There are some air filters that are designed to work for a month. After that, they are no longer efficient at cleaning the air, so you will need to take them out and clean them or replace them altogether.

There are also some other products that require air filter change outs only once or twice a year. As you can see, it all depends on the brand and type you buy.
But there is one piece of solid advice we like to dish out. (Expand to find out)

If you notice that you air filter is dirty or that the quality of air in your home has drastically diminished, it’s time to change the filter. Pay no attention to the specifications. Watch out for the signs that tell you it’s time for a replacement.

They can manifest as an itchy nose or eyes because of the allergens and dust the filter can no longer remove, coughing or funny smells coming from the vents.

It’s also important to note here that you need to change your filter a bit more often than usual if you have pets because they shed and they have animal dander.

Life is Fresh with A Clean Filter

Air Filters 101

What is a HVAC Filter Used For?

A hvac filter is used to remove airborne particles from the air. These particles might pose damage to the fan or heating coil. These filters are important because they keep your home or office clean and free of allergens, mold spores, bacteria and other microscopic pollutants. The life span of a filter varies depending on its type but typically ranges between two months to one year. A dirty filter can have an impact on the efficiency of your heating and cooling system so it's important that you replace these filters regularly for optimal performance.

What Size Filter Do I Need?

Review the documentation that came with the furnace. It should tell you what the correct furnace size is. A technician will then be able to give you advice on what level of efficiency makes the most sense. For example, if the efficiency is too high, it might cause static pressure in the motor. Which can lead to it dying sooner than it should.
But you don’t have to worry about that! Just give us a call and we’ll help you pick a filter!

Should My Filter And Furnace Be Made By The Same Company?

Generally speaking, you can buy a filter from any company. It is still a good idea to check the documentation that came with it to determine whether it is compatible. Unfortunately, a ductless filter is an original manufacturer part (O.E.M.), so it won’t be available.

What Is A MERV Rating?

What does MERV stand for? Merv stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, which is a rating system to compare filters. So now you know how many particles and pollutants your filter can catch! It was developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) to rate filters in a very simple way so that the general public can understand. A high MERV rating means a very efficient filter.

Why Should I Change My Filter?

If the air filter is clogged, it will also stop filtering the air. Which means you and your family will breathe in all those nasty pollutants and germs that can lead to asthma, allergies, stuffy noses or sneezing! An old forgotten filter may gather so much grime that it's actually going to cause havoc with airflow - which leads us back to a whole host of problems.

Please don’t let that happen because of an uncleaned filter! Call us today and we’ll take care of it for you!

How Do I Change A Filter?

Filters are typically located near the blower unit of a central heating and air conditioning system. The register is typically found at the bottom of the furnace or air handler, or in the cool air return duct. If it is around the return duct it is usually in the ceiling or on the wall.

1. Remove the grill or cover box which was holding it in place.
2. Take out the dirty filter.
3. Put it in a bag/ dispose of it.

How to install a new filter:
1. The arrow for air flow must point in the direction of the blower.
2. Record the date you are installing it on.
3. While you are in the recommended period, take it out. Wash it.
