How Does AC Work?

We all know that the hot summer days are coming, and with them comes a need for air conditioning. But how exactly does an air conditioner work? How can it keep you cool when it's over 100 degrees outside?

An air conditioner doesn't inject cool outdoor-temperature air, but instead it transfers the indoor heat to outdoors. It returns that cool air to the room, and transfers the unwanted heat and humidity outside. This is possible due to chemicals, such as freon or R134a, that change from liquid into gas when they absorb and expel heat inside of your home or office! These chemicals are referred to as refrigerant. An AC relies on three major components to change the refrigerant from being in gas form to liquid form and back again.

The three main components are: a compressor (which moves refrigerant back and forth), a condenser (where the refrigerant changes states) and an evaporator coil that absorbs heat. All of this happens in a closed-loop system where cool liquid circulates through the evaporator coil, absorbing all those pesky indoor heat while releasing new cool air to be distributed throughout our homes or offices!

~The return vents in your home draw warm air in, where it is then blown over the cold evaporator coil.

~The evaporator coil absorbs the heat from the air, while a fan blows cold air back into your home. In the evaporator coil, the absorbed heat changes the physical properties of the refrigerant from a liquid to a gas.

~From there the gas travels to the compressor, where it’s temperature is raised and it becomes highly pressurized.

~Next the hot, pressurized gas travels to the outside condenser unit where it is exposed to the outside air.

~As the outside air absorbs the heat from the refrigerant, the state changes from a gas back to a liquid.

~The refrigerant is now cold and travels indoors back to the evaporator coil to repeat the process over again. The process repeats until your home reaches its desired temperature.

People are obsessed SuperTech HVAC

Slide 1

My 15+ year AC unit for my condo went out on 4th of July weekend. My sales person Deb Zeller did a great job of answering all my questions, going over costs, even offering to provide me with a portable ac unit. The techs that performed the replacement were courteous and did a great job considering the temps they had to work in for prolonged hours. I can’t thank Supertech and their staff enough. Will be using them in the future for all my hvac needs going forward.

They have added a system to not one but two houses that did not have a HVAC system at all. They did a great job! I plan on using them to replace hvac systems in 7 of my rental properties as well. Steve has a great team, everyone is nice and courteous. They do good work and the prices are affordable.

Workers were courteous and professional. They also made the effort to keep my home clean as they worked by using shoe covers and drop cloths to protect my floors. Project was finished on schedule.

Answering Your Questions!

What types of air conditioning are there?

There's a variety to choose from, depending on the needs of your home and family. A variety of air conditioners are available, including central air conditioners, through the wall air conditioners, mini-split systems, packaged terminal air conditioners, portable air conditioners and geothermal heat pumps.

How long do Central AC units last?

Do you know how many years your AC unit will last? A well maintained AC unit should be able to operate for 12-15 years. However, if neglected or poorly taken care of with minimal maintenance and cleaning a typical lifespan might only range from 7 - 10 years!

What should I consider before an Air conditioner installation?

What model of air conditioning system would you like; cost; quality of system and quality of installation; energy consumption; indoor air quality; whether you need to modify your existing ductwork; and warranties and maintenance.

How large of an AC do I need for my home?

You may not know what AC size you need for your home, but we do! Your Manual J calculation will factor in square footage of the house, climate zone (don't worry this is just a regional determination), ductwork design and type/quality insulation. You should also consider heating generating appliances as well like air conditioners or furnaces. For example: 1000 sqr ft per ton when there's excellent insulation with minimal leaks where 400 sqr feet per ton would be needed if it was drafty because why make people uncomfortable?

How much does it cost to install air conditioning?

Asking this question will get you a wide variety of different answers. You can expect the range for installation costs from $4500-$12500, depending on many factors- including efficiency level and brand of AC unit, as well as various permits needed in your area. Additional costs you may run into include extra plumbing, electrical, relocating the unit at a new location, modifying the framing or surfacing of the home or bringing any current pair system up to code.

What’s the difference between single stage, two stage and variable speed ACs?

Single-stage air conditioners are very simple units that only operate at 100% capacity. Two-stage AC units have both a high and low setting to save energy when desired, while variable speed models allow you to set different speeds depending on your environment needs.
